I think it's a quite vital thing to have a head cover while playing airsoft, specifically in the environments CAC plays in.
Their first purpose is protection. A hat or helmet will protect your head from the elements, and will partially shield your eyes from the sun. It also protects your head and ears from being hit by bbs, which hurts.
A cover will also provide camuoflage, if it is in a military color pattern. The six-color desert pattern works well in this area, as well as three-color desert and desert MARPAT. I was in one game where two people were after me, and I hid in this shallow trench, occasionally sticking my head out slightly to check out their movements. I had a little ghillie and shrubs in my helmet cover, which also helped. I believe having the helmet on saved me from being spotted a couple times.
Lastly, a military hat or helmet provides realism. Do you see any soldiers with their heads uncovered while outside? No.
There are the above-stated reasons plus many more as to why you should have at least some type of head covering on while playing airsoft.
